Sound Machine by Micah Boylan

Sound Machine by Micah Boylan

Venti’s welcomes Micah Boylan as upstairs artist for July - August. Art fueled by emotion, inspiration and passion.

Please join us at Micah’s artist opening on Saturday, July 17.

Artist statement below:
From a young age I have illustrated my artistic strengths through painting and music. Always having a niche for creatively expressing the pure emotion of life’s beauty, my artwork and musical talents have formed an outlet for these expressions.
Being able to convey my passions through drawing, I have evolved from using cartoons, comics, and cars to creating painted works based on realism and abstract influences.
Born and raised in the Willamette Valley my surroundings have given me endless opportunities to capture the raw beauty of sunsets, mountains, ocean shores, and wildlife which I am able to extrapolate using a multitude of techniques.
As a graphic design student at Linn-Benton Community College my education broadened my horizons yielding various techniques which I found ideal to express the mood and true beauty of my surroundings.
Whether it is landscapes, abstracts, realisms, I have grown to find many ways to incorporate mood into my works.
As an artist I am able to express myself through my paintings as well as my music and have discovered a linear relationship between the two. Fueled by the power of emotion my works have evolved and continue to progress as I strive for self improvement.
As an emerging artist I take pride in knowing that this is truly just the beginning of my career and many more exciting pieces are sure to come in the near future.

June artist // basement // Heidi Kirkpatrick

2010 June 1
Modern Goddess #15 (2000)

Modern Goddess #15 (2000)

For the month of June, Venti’s Basement welcomes long time friend, photographer and Portlander Heidi Kirkpatrick.

Heidi is one of Dino’s original Oregon friends. I was introduced to Heidi and her husband Doug when Dino and I were dating and starting to get serious and he likened my meeting them to meeting his family. Thank goodness both Heidi and Doug approved!

We have a few Heidi Kirkpatrick photos in our home, each one vastly different in subject matter. There is an image of a green man foliate face/architectural embellishments projected onto a the back of a muscular man, contrasty, dark, beautiful — from her Flesh & Stone collection. Another is an odd low angle shot of the gorgeous Art Deco frieze at Rockefeller Plaza (NYC),  featuring the iconic bearded god with slicing lines framing him in to the center of the piece.

Within the last 10 years, Heidi has also began producing multimedia pieces, where she’ll print onto acetate and place images upon wood blocks, within the pages of carefully folded dictionaries and tucked inside the lids of vintage tin containers. Dino and I have an incredible  4″ x 4″ wood block featuring a tightly cropped woman’s booty — a classic in our home. The piece sits next to Dino’s coffee/reading perch.

A few of the images we have by Heidi Kirkpatrick: Block with acetate and photo of Dino (1996)

Of course my favorite Heidi Kirkpatrick in our home is a single, unframed print of Dino from 1995 or 1996. He is crouching in a Portland alley, fresh from working out. I feel like I was there.

So yes, there is history and connection between Heidi and the Ventis and it is a long time coming that she show her work at Venti’s Cafe. We are privileged to host a variety of Heidi’s prints through the month of June.

Artist’s statement below:

Heidi L. Kirkpatrick, an established fine art photographer, based in Portland Oregon has exhibited widely over the last ten years. Kirkpatrick offers interpretations of the world experienced from a women’s perspective, often using subjects with whom she has a personal relationship. Kirkpatrick pairs photographs with found objects—children’s blocks, boxes, books and even old ash trays to create renewed objects of art. By incorporating figurative images and actual portraits, Kirkpatrick “reframes” these stories, allowing for ever changing vignettes. “I <3 Venti’s”

2010 May 27
Beginning June 6 we will be open Sundays from 2-10

Beginning June 6 we will be open Sundays from 2-10

As you might know, beginning June 6 we will be open Sundays from 2-10p. Pretty cool, huh?

There is a lot of buzz about it. Thank you for your interest and support. We even had a lil mention in the Statesman Journal last week.
The Venti’s staff is super excited, too! The cooks and front house staff have been working on some  menu additions, including more vegetarian options! Awesomeness! Andy has been experimenting with vegan sauce options and Tyler is working on a veggie burger.
We are also excited to announce our new batch of T-shirts. Black Hanes tees with the green graphic “I <3 Venti’s” across the chest. (For those of you out there who don’t know, the less than symbol (<) used w/ the numeral three (3) combine to make the shape of a heart. The shirts have a heart-shape on them. To be more specific, there is a capital letter “I” + a heart shape + the Venti’s Rooster logo, spelling out I <3 Venti’s!)

New Venti's tees proudly profess "I <3 Venti's"

We are already out of the women’s cut shirts but have an order put in w/ Salem Ashtray, our friendly local screen-printer, so don’t fear. I will post when we have those ladies tees in stock!

Speaking of ladies. Venti’s is sad to say so long to the charismatic Bobby Hooper this week (pictured at right). Bobby is an aspiring actor (among other things) and is moving to Hollywood to pursue his acting career. Bobby is a much loved personality in our fair city and is a darling, besides being one of the favorite bartenders with the ladies.I know at least three women (derby girls) who are going to be very saddened by his departure, but we all want nothing but success for our friends, so kick ass, Bobby. Baby, you’re a star!

If you’re on Twitter, you can follow his pursuits as he heads to the City of Angels.

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

Open Sundays beginning June 6

Open Sundays beginning June 6

Well, it’s taken a while but it is no doubt worth the wait: Beginning June 6, Venti’s will be open on Sundays from 2-10.
The restaurant AND the bar will open at 2pm, so Basement Bar fans, this is your day to visit our cozy cozy lounge before 4pm.
It is long past time to be open on Sundays. We have worked so hard over the years. Historically Sunday has been the only day off for some of us, but Venti’s is bursting at the seams. We are frequently in the cafe on Sundays doing maintenance, taking shopping lists, preparing for the week ahead and customers come by, pull on the door handle only to find it locked, and stand in the doorway cupping their hands around their eyes to peer inside. Then they shrug and walk off. Sigh.
Venti’s wants downtown Salem to thrive. We see people downtown during the day on Sunday and we hope that being open on Sundays will drive more life into our lovely downtown core.
Salem rocks.

Also, have you seen the Salem Bicycle Taxi around? Give them a call 503-569-7223 and cruise around downtown Salem.

40 Beers in 27 Days, April 2010

2010 May 5
by jbx

During the month of April 2010, 40 different draught beers were offered / purveyed by Venti’s Cafe.  Additionally, one draught cider was offered as a part of an Earth Day eVent(i); Wandering Aengus CiderWorks’ Anthem Organic Pear Cider.

Venti’s were open 26 days in April; so,
. . . 40 beer offered in 26 days.
As is the norm, more than a different beer for everyday Venti’s were open.  But, in this case, the number far exceeds any month since I began keeping records, July 2009.

In comparison,
- 26 different beers were offered in the month of July, August, September 2009;
- 28 different beers, in November 2009;
- 31 different beers, in January 2010;
- 33 different beers, in October and December 2009 and February 2010;
- 36 different beers, in March 2010.
[Of course, typically, six or seven of the eight beers run across the month boundary. And, as regular customers know, Ninkasi Brewing Co., Eugene - Tricerahops Double IPA is always on tap.]

Venti’s Cafe offers Pacific Northwest craft beer on eight draught taps. Four taps in the ground floor Cafe; four taps in the Basement Bar. Typically, each taps set is allocated to
01. a crisp, clean lagers [kölsch, pilsner, bock] or a golden, pale, saison or wit ales
02. an amber, black, brown, or red ale or a porter or a spice, stout, or winter ale; typically, malty
03. a traditional India Pale Ale
04. a double Alt, a double IPA, an Old Ale, an Imperial Pale Ale, a NW Red Ale, an Imperial Pilsner, an Imperial Stout, or a Strong ale

April’s 40 beer are listed just below, alphabetically ordered by brewery, with location.

A second list follows with the beers categorized by type, grouped by beer style, and then ordered by increasing IBU.

Emmet was at Venti's for Take Your Child to Work Day

Take your child to work day was a few weeks ago. Yes, sorry for the lag but I wanted to share some photos Will Bragg took that day. The cute boy is Tina Brubaker’s son Emmet. Also pictured are Tricia Hande and Dino Venti (but his head would only fit in one of the photos).

I heard that Emmet had fun working w/ his mom, but who wouldn’t? She’s a barrel of laughs, always on top of her game and with a smile on her face. But Emmet did steal the show a few times throughout the day. Emmet is a full time student but is an avid soccer player, so Tina has nothing to worry about.

We love Will Bragg and have been privileged that Will is available to shoot our food, customers and the restaurant. Salem is lucky to have such talent. He did a bunch of product shots for us a few months ago. Check out the photos if you haven’t already. It’ll make you come downtown right now for some Sweet Potato Fries. He’s conveniently located upstairs from us now (above Great Harvest, along with Neanderthal Productions).
