Four taps are offered / four beers purveyed:
The bitterness, IBUs, and alcohol content, % ABV, of these beers are delineated below:
A few notes:
01. The symbol ‘~’ denotes approximate or estimated. Most, but not all, breweries report the IBU of their beers on their website. When the IBU is not posted, I query the brewery via the website ‘Contact Us’ link. This is successful about half the time. When needed, I estimated the IBU as the mid-range of the beer style’s IBU.
02. IBUs denotes International Bitterness Units. The IBU is a scale / measure of the bitterness of beer. Beer is inherently sweet; typically / predominately, hops are added to reduce the sweetness. Various hops impart various flavors. Hops have the additional benefit of being a natural preservative; hops act as a antimicrobial / antibacterial agent. The bitter taste of a high IBU beer can be lessen by the addition of malt [malted grain(s)]; stout and porter beer taste less bitter than their IBU suggest. I find Ninkasi Tricerahops Double IPA to be deceptively smooth for it 100 IBUs measure.
Further, Mr. Jimmy says 3ceraphops is the best preventative measure for gout.
03. Roots Organic Burghead Heather Ale is an example of the uses of a non-hop ingredient to reduce the inherent sweetness of the beer; RootsO use heather tips. The RootsO website notes:
This ale was brewed by the ancient tribes of Brittania over 4,000 years ago, but made popular by the ancient Picts around 350 B.C. Originally made in the form of Mead (fermented honey), This ale was coveted by all. Brewed without hops but organic Heather tips, organic honey and organic malts, this award winning ale may be the most interesting ale you’ve ever had!
BeerAdvocate.com categorizes RootsO Burghead Heather Ale as a ‘Scottish Gruit / Ancient Herbed Ale’.
